In a major step towards environmental sustainability, Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann and Aam Aadmi Party National Convener Arvind Kejriwal on Monday inaugurated a cutting-edge 15 MGD (Million Gallons per Day) Sewage Treatment Plant in Mohali. The plant, constructed at a cost of ₹145.26 crore, is among the most advanced in the country.
Speaking to the media after the inauguration, CM Bhagwant Mann said the plant incorporates latest technology and similar models will soon be implemented across Punjab. He emphasized the goal of conserving Punjab’s water resources by effectively treating and reusing wastewater. Citing Singapore’s micro-filtration methods to make rainwater drinkable, he said Punjab is moving in a similar direction.
The Chief Minister criticized previous governments for ignoring environmental issues, stating that because air, water, and land do not vote, they were often neglected. This has led to significant damage to Punjab’s natural resources. However, since the formation of the AAP government, he said serious steps are being taken to restore the environment, including reviving canals and using the best available water treatment technologies.
Quoting the Gurbani line “Pawan Guru, Pani Pita, Mata Dharat Mahat”, Mann reminded everyone of the spiritual and cultural importance of protecting nature. He urged the public to support government initiatives, especially by planting trees and promoting environmental awareness.
He also credited Arvind Kejriwal’s visionary leadership for guiding Punjab in adopting progressive governance practices. Mann praised the successful execution of the project and called it a milestone in Punjab’s journey toward sustainable development.
Kejriwal Outlines Vision for Urban Development in Punjab
Arvind Kejriwal expressed pride in the inauguration of the upgraded 15 MGD STP at Sector 83 in Mohali. He shared that the plant’s capacity has been increased from 10 MGD to 15 MGD as part of a modernization effort.
He announced that the state will soon undergo a massive transformation on a mission mode, with a detailed plan already in place. Starting December, the government will ensure improved water supply, sewerage, sanitation, roads, street lighting, and STPs in 166 cities across Punjab.
Highlighting the technical upgrades, Kejriwal said the plant uses Advanced Nutrient Removal Technology, and includes Punjab’s first 5 MGD Ultra-Filtration Tertiary Treatment Plant. The treated water will be used for purposes like irrigation, road cleaning, toilet flushing, and other municipal services, thereby reducing the reliance on fresh groundwater.
He also noted the installation of a 1 MW solar power plant at the STP site to reduce electricity consumption. This project, developed by GMADA using a long-term, scientific planning approach, is designed to meet Mohali’s needs for the next 20 years.
Kejriwal concluded by reaffirming the commitment of the state government to continue launching such environmentally conscious and citizen-centric initiatives across Punjab.
