In a bid to make Sahibzada Ajit Nagar (Mohali) a safer and crime-free city, Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann on Thursday inaugurated Phase-I of the City Surveillance and Traffic Management System, developed at a cost of ₹21.60 crore.
CM Bhagwant described this initiative as a significant step towards strengthening urban surveillance and traffic regulation. The advanced AI-based system is designed to enhance public safety, curb traffic violations, and support effective law enforcement. Installed at a total cost of ₹21.60 crore, the system operates through the Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) located in Sector-79, Mohali. It integrates 351 high-resolution CCTV cameras at 17 key junctions across the city.
CM Bhagwant highlighted that this system aims to streamline traffic flow, boost public security, and assist law enforcement agencies. It includes 175 Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, 50 Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) cameras, 92 Bullet Cameras for general surveillance, 18 PTZ (Pan, Tilt, and Zoom) cameras for detailed monitoring, and Speed Violation Detection systems at two critical locations with 16 cameras. A key feature of the initiative is the automated e-challan system, which is seamlessly linked to NIC’s VAHAN and SARATHI databases.
CM Bhagwant explained that this automated system facilitates the issuance of e-challans for traffic violations such as red-light jumping, overspeeding, triple riding, wrong-side driving, riding without helmets, and stop line/zebra crossing breaches. On average, the system generates 5,000 to 6,000 challans daily, significantly enhancing traffic law enforcement and compliance. With Phase 1 successfully implemented, the Punjab government is now preparing for Phase 2, which will extend the project to additional locations, further strengthening Mohali’s surveillance infrastructure.
CM Bhagwant outlined the future plan, stating that key areas will be equipped with advanced CCTV surveillance, major traffic junctions will feature AI-powered Adaptive Traffic Control Systems (ATCS) and Vehicle Actuated Control (VAC), and Smart Traffic Lights will be introduced to optimize vehicle movement and reduce congestion. He further emphasized that unified traffic corridors will be developed to facilitate smooth transit between Mohali, Kharar, Zirakpur, and Derabassi.
Describing the ICCC project as a milestone in urban security and intelligent traffic management, CM Bhagwant emphasized its importance for Mohali, which is rapidly expanding as a commercial, IT, and residential hub. He reiterated the Punjab government’s commitment to using cutting-edge technology to develop safer and smarter cities, setting new standards in urban governance and public security.
