Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann announced that, with the government’s dedicated efforts, the state is set to host several national and international sporting events to promote a vibrant sports culture.
Speaking at a felicitation ceremony honoring the 1975 World Cup-winning hockey squad and medalists from the National Games, Khedan Watan Punjab Dian, and Para Kheda Watan Punjab Dian, the Chief Minister revealed that Punjab will soon host a Four-Nation Hockey League. He added that more prestigious sports events are in the pipeline to strengthen Punjab’s sporting landscape. Additionally, he emphasized that gyms and playgrounds will be established in every village to steer youth away from drug abuse.
Strengthening Punjab’s Presence in International Sports
CM Bhagwant Singh stressed that Punjab possesses immense sporting talent, and the government is committed to nurturing it by providing world-class infrastructure and support. He highlighted Punjab as the first state in the country to fund athletes’ preparations for international competitions. The state aims to produce more trained sportspersons and increase Punjabi representation in India’s international sports contingents.
He lamented that previous governments failed to provide adequate sports facilities, but under his leadership, players now have access to top-tier infrastructure and training facilities. Punjab’s strong connection with sports is evident from history, as eight players from the Indian team that won the 1975 Hockey World Cup, along with the coach and manager, hailed from the state.
Recognizing Sporting Excellence
The Chief Minister acknowledged the historic victory of the 1975 Indian hockey team, the country’s only World Cup win in the sport. He criticized past governments for neglecting sports and failing to recognize athletes’ contributions, emphasizing that his administration is prioritizing player recognition and youth motivation.
He praised Punjabi athletes for their dedication and announced that the state is setting up sports nurseries to nurture young talent. CM Bhagwant Singh reiterated that promoting sports is a crucial step in Punjab’s fight against drugs, as athletes remain focused on their training and have no time for substance abuse. The annual Khedan Watan Punjab Dian provides a vital platform for players to showcase their abilities, helping the government identify promising talent for future national and international competitions.
