Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann announced on Thursday that the state is upgrading the police force with advanced infrastructure and modern technology to strengthen law and order enforcement.
Speaking at an event where 139 new vehicles were flagged off for police stations across Punjab,CM Bhagwant Singh Mann noted that Station House Officers (SHOs) at 454 police stations are now being provided with these new vehicles. He pointed out this marks a shift from previous practices where only senior officers received such resources. Emphasizing the role of SHOs as the direct link between police and the public, Mann highlighted their crucial responsibility in maintaining peace and order.
Given Punjab’s sensitive border location, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann stated that several hostile forces continuously try to disrupt the state’s peace. However, the Punjab Police has consistently thwarted such efforts. He stressed the importance of equipping the force with cutting-edge tools and scientific methods for investigation to face emerging challenges more effectively. He expressed confidence that the police will continue their legacy of professionalism and service to the people.
Highlighting the issue of drug smuggling, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said that around 70% of drugs enter the state from Pakistan via drones. To curb this, the state has collaborated with the BSF and implemented anti-drone technology. As a result, cross-border smuggling has seen a significant drop, as confirmed by BSF reports.
To address manpower shortages, the government has committed to recruiting 1,800 Constables and 300 Sub-Inspectors annually. With over 2.5 lakh applications received each year, this initiative not only strengthens the police force but also helps youth stay focused on academic and physical preparation—diverting them from drug abuse and channeling their energy constructively.
CM Bhagwant Singh Mann also revealed that a large-scale crackdown on drug networks is underway. The supply chain has been dismantled, major traffickers have been jailed, and, for the first time, the state is confiscating and demolishing properties acquired through drug money—sending a strong message to offenders.
In another milestone, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said that his government has provided nearly 55,000 jobs to youth over the past 36 months, all based on merit and without corruption or favoritism. He expressed hope that these young professionals will contribute significantly to the state’s progress.
Reiterating his commitment to transparency, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann declared a zero-tolerance policy toward corruption. He assured that corrupt officials will be held accountable and punished appropriately. The state aims to deliver responsive, citizen-focused governance and bring essential services to people’s doorsteps.
Lastly, CM Bhagwant Singh Mann introduced a unique mentorship program where senior IAS and IPS officers will mentor students in government schools across Punjab. Each officer will guide one school, fostering educational development and inspiring students to pursue prestigious careers. Mann believes this initiative will empower students to dream big and succeed across various fields.
Earlier, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav extended a warm welcome to the Chief Minister and other dignitaries at the event.
