CM Mohan Yadav: Sonu Nigam Honoured with National Lata Mangeshkar Award
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav felicitated renowned playback singer Sonu Nigam with the National Lata Mangeshkar Award at a grand cultural ceremony held in Indore today. The event was organised by the Department of Culture in collaboration with the Indore district administration.
CM Dr. Mohan Yadav said that Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar elevated Indian music to new heights with her divine voice. The award instituted in her name is a tribute to the unmatched contributions of legendary artists who have left an indelible mark on the world of music. He added that felicitating Sonu Nigam today feels like witnessing the full moon on an Amavasya night. Indore, he said, holds a unique place in India’s rich musical heritage.
Playback singer Shri Sonu Nigam, visibly emotional, said that Lata ji was not just an inspiration but a living embodiment of music. Receiving this award, he said, was one of the most special moments of his life. He recalled that 30 years ago, he had come to Indore to perform at the Lata Mangeshkar Alankaran Samaroh, and today being honoured at the same ceremony was a matter of immense pride for him.

Divisional Commissioner Dr. Sudam Khade remarked that the occasion was historic as it coincided with the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar. He said that the National Lata Mangeshkar Award holds a prestigious place in the music world, and Madhya Pradesh takes pride in conferring it in her memory. Lata ji had placed Indian culture and music on the global stage.
This year’s National Lata Mangeshkar Award (2025) was presented by CM Dr. Mohan Yadav to Sonu Nigam (Mumbai). Following the award ceremony, a soulful musical evening was held, featuring popular playback singer Ankit Tiwari and his troupe, who mesmerized the audience with melodious performances. The event began with the reading of the citation by Culture Department official Shri S.P. Namdeo.
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav paid floral tributes at the statue of Swar Kokila Lata Mangeshkar and also viewed the ‘Chitra-Latika’ based on her life. The ceremony was attended by Urban Development & Housing Minister Shri Kailash Vijayvargiya, Water Resources Minister Shri Tulsiram Silawat, MP Shri Shankar Lalwani, Mayor Shri Pushyamitra Bhargava, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Sudam Khade, Collector Shri Shivam Verma, MLA Shri Mahendra Hardia, Smt. Usha Thakur, Smt. Malini Gaur, Shri Madhu Verma, Shri Golu Shukla, former MLA Shri Jeetu Jirati, Shri Sumit Mishra and a large gathering of music enthusiasts.
