Haryana moves to alleviate financial burden on farmers by amending electricity supply code regulations
The State Government invokes Section 108 of the Electricity Act, 2003, bringing significant relief to the farming community
Chandigarh, July 19-
CM News: In a significant move aimed at providing relief to the agricultural community, the CM, Sh. Nayab Singh Saini led State Government has directed the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) to amend the HERC Electricity Supply Code Regulations, 2014. This directive follows the observation that recent amendments have imposed an undue financial burden on farmers.
The HERC, through its 4th amendment to the Electricity Supply Code Regulations, 2014, notified on January 15, 2024, had revised the cost-sharing mechanism for the replacement and repair of distribution transformers (DT).
As per the amendment, now no fee will be charged from the consumers for replacing or repairing the transformer in case of replaced/repaired for any reason including theft. Whereas earlier, consumers had to deposit 20 percent of the cost of the transformer in case it was damaged/theft during the warranty period and 10 percent of the cost of the transformer beyond the warranty period.
However, it was noted that the existing provision has predominantly affected agricultural connections. Farmers, who are already grappling with numerous challenges, were required to share the cost of replacing or repairing individual transformers, even in cases of theft. This requirement has added an unnecessary financial strain on them.
Recognizing the plight of the farmers and understanding the critical role they play in the state’s economy, the State Government has decided to give relief to the farmers. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring that farmers are not overburdened with additional costs.
