CM Nitish Kumar today unveiled the official mascot ‘Chand’ of Hero Asia Cup-2025 and the trophy of the tournament at ‘Sankalp’, 1 Aney Marg. He also flagged off the Trophy Gaurav Yatra. This is the 12th edition of the prestigious men’s hockey tournament, which will be held for the first time in Bihar from 29th August to 7th September 2025 at the International Hockey Stadium, Rajgir Sports Complex.
CM Nitish Kumar said that organizing Hero Asia Cup-2025 in Bihar is a matter of pride for the state. This event will not only showcase the potential of international sports event but will also strengthen the image of tourism, art and culture of Bihar at the global level. The state-of-the-art hockey stadium at Rajgir has been equipped with world-class training and competition facilities for the players. Congratulations to all the players who participated in the tournament.
The mascot ‘Chand’ is inspired by India’s national animal, the tiger, which symbolises courage, energy and skill. The red cloak symbolises power and enthusiasm, while the magician’s cap is a tribute to hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand. The name ‘Chand’ is also inspired by Dhyan Chand, who gained world fame by practicing on moonlit nights. The mascot is also inspired by the tiger of Valmiki Tiger Reserve and symbolizes discipline, dedication and passion for victory. The insignia on its chest honours the contribution of Major Dhyan Chand.
The tournament will begin on August 29 (National Sports Day and Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary). Teams from India, China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, South Korea, Oman and Bangladesh will take part in the tournament. The winning team will directly qualify for the World Cup. So far, South Korea has won five times, while India and Pakistan have won three times each.
With an aim to create awareness and connect the youth towards hockey, Trophy Gaurav Yatra has started from 17th August which will cover all the districts of Bihar as well as Chennai, Chandigarh, Delhi, Odisha, Assam and Jharkhand.
Speaking on the occasion, Hockey India Goalkeeper Shri P. R. Sreejesh said that the people of Bihar have a deep attachment with hockey and under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar , sports is developing at a rapid pace. The international stadium in Rajgir is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and the players will get all the necessary arrangements here.
On this occasion, the President of Hockey India, Shri Bhola Nath Singh presented a memento to CM Nitish Kumar and Shri P.R. A short film on the tournament was also screened at the event.
Deputy Chief Minister Shri Samrat Chaudhary, Sports Minister Shri Surendra Mehta, Principal Secretary to CM Shri Deepak Kumar, Development Commissioner Shri Pratyaya Amrit, senior officials, Olympians and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
