On Tuesday, Gukesh, 19, played with the White pieces against Greek GM Nikolas Theodorou in Round 6. Theodorou, unaware of Gukesh’s unique feat, was asked, “Do you know what the Chigorin Club is?”
“They guessed, ‘People who have beaten a world champion?’” the report said. When informed that he had become the third player to defeat Gukesh in classical time control, Theodorou admitted, “Oh, okay, I didn’t know, but it feels good.”
For D Gukesh, however, there was little to celebrate. After the game, he shook hands with his opponent and stormed out of the playing hall in frustration, visibly weighed down by consecutive losses.
The setback came just a day after Gukesh lost to 16-year-old GM Abhimanyu Mishra, making this a challenging start for the young champion.
