Deepak Tijori Defends Deepika Padukone’s Exit from Spirit Over Long Work Hours

Deepak Tijori Backs Deepika Padukone’s 8-Hour Workday Demand, Calls It ‘Necessary’

Actor-director Deepak Tijori has stepped forward in support of Deepika Padukone amid her decision to exit Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s upcoming film Spirit. The Bollywood actress reportedly walked away from the project, which stars Prabhas, after advocating for a structured 8‑hour workday—a request believed to be influenced by her recent transition into motherhood.

A Call for Healthier Schedules

Deepika’s departure has ignited debate within the industry over whether film sets can accommodate more balanced, humane schedules. Tijori, speaking with India Today, emphasized that Padukone’s demand is not only fair but essential in modern times. He noted that during his era, joint family setups provided natural childcare support—but today’s nuclear families often lack that safety net.

“If you’re living alone with your spouse and have a child, you have to manage everything yourself,” Deepak Tijori explained. “Parenting today is a very different ballgame. Times have changed.”

Acknowledging Long Shooting Days

Deepak Tijori also addressed the grueling 14–16-hour workdays typical on film shoots, noting that while such schedules were once expected, contemporary actors are rightfully prioritizing their health and well-being.

“Those who are demanding better conditions—they have their reasons. They’re still working long hours, but today’s generation is more vocal about their boundaries, and that’s fair. It’s not a hobby—it’s a job, it’s a responsibility.”

Industry Voices Weigh In

Earlier, actress Priya Banerjee, speaking to Moneycontrol.com, supported Padukone’s stance for structured work shifts, arguing that it helps reduce burnout without sacrificing performance quality. She referenced actresses like Kajol and Rani Mukerji—notably in films like Hichki—to demonstrate how efficient shoots can coexist with strong creative work:

“Producers need to realise that people who feel respected and well-rested create better magic on screen. It’s not just about fairness, it’s about smarter filmmaking.”
