Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched ‘SANJAY – The Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS)’ from South Block, New Delhi. SANJAY is an automated system that integrates data from various ground and aerial battlefield sensors, processes it to verify accuracy, eliminates duplication, and combines it to create a unified surveillance picture of the battlefield through a secured Army Data Network and Satellite Communication Network. This system will enhance battlefield transparency and revolutionize future warfare by providing inputs to Command & Army Headquarters and the Indian Army Decision Support System via a Centralized Web Application.
The BSS is outfitted with advanced sensors and cutting-edge analytics. It will monitor the extensive land borders, prevent intrusions, and assess situations with unmatched precision, serving as a force multiplier in Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance. This will allow commanders to operate effectively in both conventional and sub-conventional operations within a Network-Centric Environment. Its induction marks a significant advancement toward data and network-centric capabilities in the Indian Army.
SANJAY has been developed indigenously through a collaborative effort between the Indian Army and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), fostering a supportive ecosystem for achieving ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in line with the Indian Army’s ‘Year of Technology Absorption.’ The system will be rolled out across all operational Brigades, Divisions, and Corps of the Indian Army in three phases, from March to October 2025, which has been designated as the ‘Year of Reforms’ by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The system has been developed under the Buy (Indian) category at a cost of Rs 2,402 crore.
Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary (Defence Production) Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Chairman & Managing Director of BEL Shri Manoj Jain, along with other senior officials from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and BEL, were present at the flagging-off ceremony.
