Chhath Puja is a major festival celebrated with great devotion by the Purvanchali community, involving the worship of the Sun God while standing in knee-deep water. However, the traditional celebrations on the Yamuna riverbank had been halted during the pandemic and subsequently restricted due to court orders.
In recent years, to keep the festival alive, the Delhi government had arranged hundreds of small temporary water tanks in parks and public spaces across the city, allowing devotees to perform rituals in controlled environments. This year’s decision to establish temporary ghats directly along the Yamuna banks is seen as a landmark development, providing devotees with a more authentic and meaningful experience.
CM Rekha Gupta assured residents that all facilities, including cleanliness drives, security arrangements, and crowd management, would be meticulously managed to ensure a smooth celebration. The move has been welcomed by the Purvanchali community and festival organizers, who are hopeful for an uninterrupted and joyous Chhath Puja after years of restrictions.
The grand celebration of Chhath Puja this year is expected to draw large gatherings, with devotees participating in the rituals, prayers, and festivities along the Yamuna river, further enriching Delhi’s vibrant cultural tapestry.
