Delhi CM Rekha Gupta lays the foundation for the first Atal Canteen in Timarpur, providing affordable meals at Rs 5 per person. Delhi government plans 100 Atal Canteens to support underprivileged communities.
In a major move to support underprivileged communities, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday laid the foundation stone of the first “Atal” canteen in the Timarpur area. This initiative, named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is part of the Delhi government’s plan to open 100 canteens across the capital, providing affordable meals to those in need.
The Atal canteens will serve two meals a day at just Rs 5 per person, making nutritious food accessible to the economically weaker sections of society. Officials said that the project aims to reach every underprivileged citizen in the national capital efficiently and promptly.

Addressing the gathering at JJ Cluster in Sanjay Basti, CM Rekha Gupta emphasized that this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to working-class families. “In just eight months, a strong step has been taken to fulfil another promise made with Delhi. An extensive network of 100 Atal canteens will be set up in the capital so that this facility easily and timely reaches every needy person,” Gupta said in a post on X.
Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood accompanied the Chief Minister during the foundation stone ceremony. Officials confirmed that the first Atal canteen will officially open on December 25, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, highlighting the government’s dedication to the late leader’s vision of public service.
The Delhi government’s Atal canteen project was a key promise of the BJP in the February 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. The project is expected to enhance food security in the city, reduce hunger, and provide a dignified solution for low-income residents struggling to meet daily meal requirements.
This ambitious initiative underlines the Delhi government’s focus on social welfare, urban development, and the welfare of marginalized communities, ensuring equitable access to essential services while honoring the legacy of one of India’s most respected leaders.
