Delhi CM Rekha Gupta highlights cloud seeding as a key solution to tackle winter pollution. Successful trial in Burari tested artificial rain technology with IIT-Kanpur.
Delhi CM Rekha Gupta emphasized the importance of cloud seeding in addressing the city’s rising pollution levels during the winter months. In a post shared on X, she highlighted the significance of a successful trial conducted in Burari on October 23, 2025, calling it a major step toward reducing air pollution in the national capital.
“Cloud seeding is a first for Delhi. This trial demonstrates our commitment to using innovative technology to combat environmental challenges, especially during the winter season when pollution spikes,” CM Rekha Gupta said.
Details of the Cloud Seeding Trial in Delhi
During the test run, small amounts of silver iodide and sodium chloride—common compounds used in artificial rain—were released from a Cessna 206-H aircraft. However, officials noted that rainfall did not occur due to low atmospheric moisture levels, which were below 20%, whereas cloud seeding typically requires around 50% humidity.
The IIT-Kanpur report stated, “This flight was a proving mission to evaluate the cloud-seeding system, aircraft endurance, seeding equipment, flares, and inter-agency coordination. No precipitation occurred as cloud cover and moisture levels were insufficient.”
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa explained that the trial assessed the cloud-seeding system’s readiness and coordination. The project, a joint initiative between the Delhi Government and IIT-Kanpur, aims to explore artificial rainfall as a method to reduce particulate matter and smog during the post-Diwali season.
Future Plans for Cloud Seeding in Delhi
Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last month, five cloud-seeding trials are planned in northwest Delhi, with approval from multiple agencies including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The Delhi Cabinet had sanctioned the project at a total cost of ₹3.21 crore, with trials delayed earlier due to unfavorable weather and monsoon conditions.
The initiative reflects Delhi’s commitment to using cutting-edge technology to improve air quality and protect residents from seasonal pollution spikes. CM Gupta reaffirmed that cloud seeding could become a viable solution to combat winter smog and enhance the city’s environmental resilience.
