Delhi CM Rekha Gupta supports Chandni Chowk traders amid sealing drive, calls the action unjustified. Directs officials to inform Supreme Court that the area is a designated commercial zone since 1962.
Delhi News: The Delhi government has come out in strong support of the Chandni Chowk traders amid rising anger over the ongoing sealing drive in the historic marketplace. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has assured traders that her government will take all necessary steps to protect their interests and present their case before the Supreme Court.
CM Rekha Gupta Holds High-Level Meeting on the Issue
Following a meeting with a traders’ delegation led by MP Praveen Khandelwal on Saturday (October 25), CM Rekha Gupta immediately convened a high-level meeting with senior Delhi government officials, including the Chief Secretary and the Municipal Commissioner.
During the discussion, the CM directed the officials to inform the Supreme Court that Chandni Chowk has been a designated commercial zone under the Delhi Master Plan since 1962.

Traders Present Their Case
MP Praveen Khandelwal and members of the delegation highlighted that Chandni Chowk has always been a fully commercial area, and that the sealing drive was triggered by a few individual complaints.
They urged that both the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) should jointly represent the traders’ case before the Supreme Court, clarifying that the area is part of a legally approved business zone under the Master Plan.
‘Chandni Chowk is a Commercial Zone,’ Says CM Rekha Gupta
CM Rekha Gupta emphasized that Chandni Chowk has been recognized as a commercial area since 1962 and falls under complete commercial or mixed land use as per the Delhi Master Plan 2021.
She asserted that the ongoing sealing of shops is unwarranted and unfair, and directed the Chief Secretary and MCD Commissioner to bring this fact to the attention of the Supreme Court. “Sealing in Chandni Chowk is not justified. The area is part of Delhi’s commercial fabric, and traders must not be penalized for running legitimate businesses,” said CM Rekha Gupta.
Government to Defend Traders in Supreme Court
Rekha Gupta assured that her government stands firmly with the traders of not just Chandni Chowk but all of Delhi.
She said, “The Delhi government, Municipal Corporation, and if necessary, the Central government will together present the traders’ case before the Supreme Court. Our goal is to safeguard Delhi’s trading structure and ensure a fair resolution.”
Key Attendees at the Meeting
The meeting was attended by Mukesh Sachdeva (President, Delhi Hindustani Mercantile Association), Shribhagwan Bansal (General Secretary), Praveen Shankar Kapoor (Delhi BJP Spokesperson), Arvind Garg (Chandni Chowk BJP President), Gopal Garg, Subhash Goyal, and Abhishek Ganeriwal, among other prominent trader leaders.
