Delhi CM Rekha Gupta welcomes Supreme Court’s approval for green crackers use during Diwali in Delhi-NCR, emphasizing a balance between festive celebrations and environmental protection. Learn about the new guidelines and green cracker benefits.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her gratitude to the Supreme Court for permitting the sale and use of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR during the upcoming Diwali festival. The apex court’s order ends the four-year-long ban on firecrackers in the national capital but allows only certified green crackers to be used between October 18 and October 21 within specific time slots.
In a statement on social media platform X, Rekha Gupta highlighted that the Supreme Court’s decision respects the sentiments and enthusiasm of the public during this sacred festival while maintaining a balanced approach towards environmental protection. She said, “We express our gratitude to the Supreme Court for granting permission to use green firecrackers in the capital at the special request of the Delhi government. This decision respects the sentiments and enthusiasm of the public during sacred festivals like Diwali, while also reflecting a balanced approach towards environmental protection.”
The Delhi CM Rekha Gupta assured citizens that the government remains committed to a clean and green Delhi. Rekha Gupta urged residents to join hands in celebrating a green Diwali by using eco-friendly crackers, aiming for a vibrant yet environmentally conscious festive atmosphere. “This Diwali, let us all come together to celebrate with green firecrackers, harmonising festivity and environmental protection, and work towards realising the resolve of a ‘green and prosperous Delhi,’” she added.
The Supreme Court’s directive specifies that green crackers can be burst only during two time windows: from 6:00 am to 7:00 am and 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, from October 18 to 21. This balanced approach attempts to keep the festive spirit alive while reducing the harmful impact of traditional firecrackers on air quality and public health.
Green crackers, developed by scientists at the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI), are designed to minimize pollution by using fewer harmful chemicals than conventional firecrackers. Their usage aligns with growing environmental concerns and government initiatives aimed at reducing air pollution, especially in urban areas like Delhi.
This Supreme Court verdict is seen as a positive step towards celebrating festivals responsibly, blending tradition with environmental sustainability.
