In a significant move to tackle rising air pollution, the Delhi government has mandated that all private and government buildings with G+5 floors or higher must install anti-smog guns by November 29, 2025.
Delhi Government : Announced by Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the directive comes ahead of winter, when pollution levels and particulate matter like PM10 and PM2.5 typically spike.
Applicability to commercial and institutional buildings
The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) clarified that the rules will cover commercial complexes, shopping malls, hotels, office buildings, educational institutions (including universities), and other high-rises with a built-up area exceeding 3,000 sq. metres. Residential houses, societies, and apartment complexes are exempt from this requirement.
Number of anti-smog guns based on building size
The DPCC specified the number of guns needed according to building area:
-
Buildings under 10,000 sq. metres: minimum 3 guns
-
10,001–15,000 sq. metres: 4 guns
-
15,001–20,000 sq. metres: 5 guns
-
20,001–25,000 sq. metres: 6 guns
-
For every additional 5,000 sq. metres beyond this, 1 extra gun is required.
Operation guidelines
Anti-smog guns must operate throughout the year, except during the monsoon season (June 15 – October 1). Strict adherence to installation and operational protocols is mandatory.
Government commitment to clean air
Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa emphasized that protecting residents from air pollution, particularly during winter, is a top priority. He added that clear guidelines have been issued for proper implementation, with anti-smog guns playing a crucial role in improving air quality.
