The Delhi Government is set to launch a large-scale, month-long cleanliness campaign from August 1, announced Education and Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood on Friday. The drive will see active participation from schools, resident welfare associations (RWAs), and community groups.
This initiative is part of the response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to strengthen sanitation efforts across the country. The campaign aims to significantly improve cleanliness in the capital, particularly focusing on neglected and underdeveloped areas. Minister Sood reviewed campaign preparations at a high-level meeting held at the Delhi Secretariat.
Stressing that cleanliness is a shared responsibility, Sood highlighted the need for on-ground impact and urged all stakeholders to ensure broad-based participation and effective implementation.
The meeting included the Chief Secretary and senior officials from the MCD, NDMC, Health, Education, Revenue, IT Departments, and all district magistrates.
Special focus will be placed on unauthorised colonies, slum areas, and underserved zones through targeted awareness campaigns. RWAs and local community groups will be encouraged to take initiative and responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in their localities.
In a key move, the campaign will involve both government and private schools. Students will serve as “Cleanliness Ambassadors,” spreading awareness among families and communities to promote hygiene beyond school boundaries and into parks, streets, markets, and religious places.
Minister Sood also stated that all government offices will carry out internal cleanliness drives during the campaign’s initial two days.
To support the effort digitally, the Urban Development Department and MCD will launch an online platform where citizens and RWAs can register, upload photos of clean-up activities, and flag problem areas.
The Revenue Department will establish teams of three senior officers each to work directly with RWAs and promote hygiene education. Public engagement will be further boosted through celebrity endorsements, street performances, songs, posters, and public announcements.
With a well-coordinated plan and involvement from multiple sectors, the Delhi government aims to set a strong example of urban cleanliness and civic participation through this upcoming campaign.
