Delhi Metro renames 21 stations to reflect local identity and heritage. 12 names retained, 7 modified, and 2 completely renamed. Details on all changes, future plans, and cultural significance.
In a major move to strengthen local identity and ease navigation, the Delhi Metro Authority recently reviewed proposals to rename 21 metro stations across the city. After careful evaluation, 12 station names were retained, seven were modified to better reflect their local context, and two were completely renamed.
Key Changes in Metro Station Names
Among the seven stations that were modified, the new names aim to preserve local cultural significance and assist commuters in identifying areas more easily.
These include:
Uttari Pitampura–Prashant Vihar (previously Prashant Vihar)
Jagatpur–Wazirabad (previously Jagatpur)
Nanak Pyau–Derawal Nagar (previously Derawal Nagar)
Khanpur–Vayusainabad (previously Khanpur)
Nanaksar–Sonia Vihar (previously Sonia Vihar)
Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar (previously Mayur Vihar Pocket 1)
Mangolpur Kalan–West Enclave (previously West Enclave)
Two stations received entirely new names to better reflect local identity:
North Pitampura → Haiderpur Village
Pitampura → Madhuban Chowk
Twelve other stations retained their original proposed names, including Majlis Park, Bhalaswa, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Deepali Chowk, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Soorghat, Jharoda Majra, Burari, Pushpanjali, and Maujpur–Babarpur.

Factors Behind the Renaming
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta explained that the renaming exercise considered multiple factors:
Historical, social, and cultural significance of the area
Recommendations from local representatives and citizens
Ease of navigation for commuters
Avoiding confusion while maintaining clear geographical identification
She added that in some cases, combined station names were approved to represent multiple nearby areas, making it easier for commuters to locate stations and understand their surroundings.
Future Renaming Plans
The Delhi government may continue to examine proposals for renaming metro stations if deemed appropriate. CM Gupta emphasized that metro stations are more than transit points—they represent the cultural and social identity of the neighborhoods they serve.
“The new names are not just identifiers; they are a tribute to the heritage and values of Delhi’s diverse communities,” she said.
This initiative aligns with the Delhi government’s broader effort to ensure public infrastructure reflects local heritage while making navigation simpler and more intuitive for daily commuters.
