DELHI NEWS : Air India announced on Monday that it will suspend Delhi–Washington DC flights from September 1, citing multiple operational factors impacting its long-haul network. The decision comes amid a major fleet retrofit programme and continued airspace restrictions.
The airline said the primary reason for the suspension is a temporary shortfall in its fleet, as 26 Boeing 787-8 aircraft are undergoing upgrades to enhance passenger experience — a process expected to keep several planes grounded until late 2026. The closure of Pakistani airspace, forcing longer routes and adding operational complexity, has further influenced the move.
Air India emphasised that the suspension aims to maintain the reliability of its overall route network. The carrier is also in the midst of a phased resumption of international operations after halting flights in June following the AI171 crash in Ahmedabad, which killed 260 people.
Recent technical issues, including the August 5 Delhi–Milan flight cancellation due to a Boeing 787 snag, and a DGCA audit in July highlighting 51 safety lapses, have prompted the airline to focus on improving safety standards and operational efficiency. Air India plans to restore full international services by October 1 while working to minimise disruptions and enhance passenger experience.
