DELHI NEWS : The traffic burden on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway is expected to ease soon, as the elevated road being built above the Dwarka Expressway tunnel — stretching from near Yashobhoomi to Mahipalpur — is projected to be fully operational by next month. The only remaining task is to link this new road to the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway at Mahipalpur, which is likely to be completed in August.
Over 1.5 Lakh Vehicles Expected Daily
Once connected, the route will be fully functional, with estimates suggesting that more than 1.5 lakh vehicles will use it each day. This is expected to have a direct positive impact on reducing congestion on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.
The stretch from Dwarka Expressway to the airport is already operational, with over one lakh vehicles currently using the tunnel between Yashobhoomi and the airport daily. At present, vehicles can travel from Dwarka Expressway directly to the airport and continue toward Gurugram via the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.
To facilitate movement towards Dhaula Kuan, a six-lane elevated road above the tunnel is being built, allowing vehicles from Dwarka Expressway to access the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway directly at Mahipalpur.
Sharp Drop in Congestion Expected
The infrastructure also includes two-lane service roads on either side. While the road is already in partial use, traffic often becomes heavy, causing inconvenience to commuters — leading many to avoid it. However, once fully completed, the road is expected to be used to its full capacity.
It is projected that over 50,000 vehicles will shift to this route, significantly easing pressure on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. Around 80% of these are vehicles that currently rely on the expressway.
Experts suggest that constructing a tunnel from Mahipalpur to the airport on the Gurugram side could further help reduce congestion, especially between Sirhaul border and Mahipalpur.
