Delhi News : An official stated that once the concrete layer is removed, the deck surface will undergo a thorough inspection to check for any signs of damage, including cracks, loose areas, or honeycombed concrete.
Delhi commuters may soon get some relief as the Public Works Department (PWD) has invited bids, as of June 21, to carry out repair work on two key flyovers in the capital—Raja Garden and Shadipur—at an estimated cost of ₹8.8 crore, according to a Hindustan Times report. The Raja Garden flyover, which became operational in 2001, and the Shadipur flyover, opened in 1971, are both long overdue for maintenance.
The Raja Garden flyover, connecting Mayapuri and Raja Garden, is expected to undergo repairs costing around ₹4.9 crore. Meanwhile, the Shadipur flyover, which links Moti Nagar to Shadipur, will require repairs worth ₹3.9 crore.
the scope of work includes fixing damaged and honeycombed concrete in the core structure, replacing the elastomeric bearings that link the slabs to the base, strengthening girders, and repairing expansion joints.
Once the existing concrete layer is removed, the deck will be carefully examined for structural distress such as cracks, loose patches, or honeycombing. The surface will then be thoroughly cleaned to eliminate any residual debris, the report adds.
Over time, flyovers are exposed to wear and tear due to various factors like temperature fluctuations, which cause the concrete to expand and contract—eventually forming cracks. To counteract this, expansion joints are installed. These joints, often consisting of iron rods between slabs, allow for natural movement in the concrete, reduce stress, and absorb vibrations—thus extending the flyover’s lifespan.
