Delhi Police: On May 31, according to police, a 28-year-old lady came them and reported that two days prior, she met a man on a dating app who went by the name of Jatin.
According to officials with knowledge of the situation on Friday, Delhi Police detained a 28-year-old man and his companion on Tuesday after they allegedly utilized dating apps to meet women with the goal to rob them.
The accused were implicated in four robberies in the Capital, one of which occurred in Rohini and involved the owner of a jewelry store being robbed at gunpoint.
The accused, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh, are Mohan Garden residents Vipin Kamal Kumar and Rahul Singh, who works as his assistant.
On May 31, according to police, a 28-year-old woman came them and stated that two days prior, she met a man on a dating app who went by the name of Jatin, and the two of them struck up a conversation. When she was by herself, he requested her to meet him at her house. She asked him over on May 30, but he showed up with his friend, the woman said.
“The accused brought the victim to her room, where he and his companion taped her lips and bound her hands and legs. She was beaten and had her phone, gold jewelry, and ₹5,000 in cash stolen by the suspects, according to an anonymous cop.
A team under the direction of inspector Kamlesh Kumar began an investigation after a case was filed based on the complaint.
The two suspects arrived in a white Creta, according to CCTV footage that the police viewed near the victim’s residence while conducting their investigation. Additionally, the call detail data associated with the suspect’s phone number were acquired and examined. It turned out that he also had conversations with another Rohini-based woman. The officer continued, “Police conducted additional investigation and discovered that the suspect used the same method to rob the second woman as well.”
The Rohini woman, 46, admitted to authorities that she and her spouse were no longer together. She resided with her two children who attended school. In February, she got to know the suspect using a dating app. He went by the name Sunil Nagi. When she was by herself, he and his associate went to her house, tied her up, beat her, and stole from her. Because she was afraid for her children’s safety, she refrained from reporting the incident to the police. But on June 19, the officer claimed, she later reported the issue.
On Tuesday, the detectives used both technological and manual monitoring to locate Rahul, who was taken into custody outside Safdarjung Hospital. Rahul was taken into custody from Vipin Garden after disclosing information about Vijay after questioning, according to DCP Singh.
It came to light during questioning that Vijay had been detained previously in 2016 on suspicion of robbing a guy in Anand Vihar of $1,000. He was then taken into custody in 2018 and 2020 for robbing jewelry stores at gunpoint. He was apprehended once more in 2022 after a stolen scooter was discovered on him.
The two acknowledged their roles in each of these occurrences. They further disclosed that they used this app to get in touch with women in order to rob them and make quick cash,” DCP Singh stated.
