Delhi Red Fort blast: Chandni Chowk market to remain closed after high-intensity car explosion kills 9 and injures several. NSG and forensic teams investigating; security tightened across Delhi.
Delhi witnessed a devastating car blast near the Red Fort Metro Station on Monday evening, killing nine people and injuring several others. In the aftermath of the explosion, Chandni Chowk, one of the city’s busiest markets and a major tourist hub, will remain closed on Tuesday, announced Market Association President Sanjay Bhargaw.
Blast Details and Impact
The explosion, which occurred around 7 pm, left a chaotic scene with mangled vehicles and bodies scattered near the historic Red Fort area. Both Red Fort and Chandni Chowk, situated in Old Delhi, are densely populated, making the timing and location of the blast particularly alarming for authorities and citizens alike.

Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the blast did not leave any depression on the ground, which is often a typical indicator of a high-intensity explosion. Shah emphasized that the nature of this explosion differed from previous terror-related incidents. Unlike earlier cases where investigators found wires, nails, and other components commonly used in improvised explosive devices (IEDs), such materials were absent this time.
Forensic and NSG Analysis Underway
Samples from the blast site have been sent for forensic analysis and examination by the National Security Guard (NSG). Shah highlighted that it is “too early” to determine the exact cause of the blast. “We are keeping all angles open and investigating from every perspective. It is very difficult to ascertain the cause until the samples are thoroughly analyzed by the FSL and NSG. No angle is being considered closed,” he said.
Shah also noted that, unlike typical terror blasts, victims of this incident did not show signs of facial burns or blackening caused by explosive residue, further complicating the investigation.
Security Measures and Market Closure
In response to the incident, security has been heightened across Delhi, especially around sensitive areas like Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, and nearby crowded zones. The temporary closure of Chandni Chowk market aims to ensure public safety while authorities continue their investigation.
Officials continue to urge citizens to remain cautious and cooperate with law enforcement agencies during the ongoing investigation. Updates on the blast and subsequent security measures will be shared as they become available.
