Pushkar Singh Dhami defends the Gairsain Assembly session as Yashpal Arya criticises its short duration and raises concerns over Uttarakhand’s development.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami defended the state government’s development agenda and budgetary planning during a heated political exchange at the Gairsain Assembly session on Tuesday. While Dhami urged the opposition to adopt a constructive approach, Congress leaders, led by Leader of the Opposition Yashpal Arya, protested against the short duration of the session and accused the BJP government of neglecting regional development.
The Gairsain Assembly session has become a focal point of political debate, with the ruling BJP highlighting its development initiatives and the Congress questioning the government’s commitment to public issues, infrastructure, healthcare and accountability.
Dhami Highlights Development Plans and New Schemes
After meeting Assembly Speaker Ritu Bhushan Khanduri and Leader of the Opposition Yashpal Arya at the Vidhan Sabha Bhawan, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke about the government’s priorities and upcoming budgetary provisions.
Dhami said the budget was designed to support the overall development of Uttarakhand. He added that new schemes had been included, while existing programmes would receive additional momentum. The government, he said, was also focusing on innovation and initiatives aimed at improving development across the state.
Responding to the Congress protest outside the Assembly, Dhami said the opposition should approach political differences constructively. He argued that criticism could encourage the government to improve its performance and stressed that substantive legislative business would take place inside the Assembly.
The Chief Minister’s remarks came amid growing political tensions over the schedule and agenda of the Gairsain Assembly session.
Yashpal Arya Questions the Short Duration of the Session
Leader of the Opposition Yashpal Arya strongly criticised the BJP-led government, alleging that the Assembly was not being given sufficient time to discuss important public issues.
Arya claimed that the state legislature had not met for even 60 days during the entire year and questioned the decision to hold a final session lasting only two days. He argued that the tight schedule left little opportunity for meaningful debate and scrutiny.
According to Arya, the session’s programme included paying tributes to departed individuals, presenting a supplementary budget and passing it by the following day. He alleged that such a schedule reduced the Assembly’s role to a procedural exercise rather than providing adequate time for discussion.
The Congress leader also questioned why the Business Advisory Committee meeting had been held in Dehradun instead of Gairsain, which serves as Uttarakhand’s summer capital.

Congress Raises Healthcare and Infrastructure Concerns
The opposition’s criticism extended beyond the duration of the session to the long-standing development challenges facing the Gairsain region.
Arya questioned the government’s spending on essential public services, including healthcare facilities, colleges, medical infrastructure and basic amenities. He demanded clarity on the funds allocated to address these concerns in the budget.
The Congress leader alleged that the government had failed to make sufficient progress on issues raised over the past five years. He also accused the BJP of showing inadequate commitment to the development of Gairsain and other parts of Uttarakhand.
The debate has brought renewed attention to regional development demands, particularly the need to improve public healthcare, strengthen educational institutions and expand essential infrastructure.
Ankita Bhandari Case Also Features in Opposition’s Attack
Arya also raised the murder case of Ankita Bhandari while criticising the state government’s record on accountability and law and order.
He questioned the legal protections available to an accused individual who was subsequently appointed as a Governor, arguing that the matter required serious scrutiny. The issue formed part of the Congress party’s broader allegations against the government.
The opposition has continued to raise concerns over corruption, public safety and the handling of sensitive cases, adding to the political pressure surrounding the Assembly proceedings.
Supplementary Budget and Bills on the Assembly Agenda
The Gairsain Assembly session is taking place amid a broader political confrontation between the BJP government and Congress over governance, regional development and legislative accountability.
The immediate focus is on the presentation of supplementary budgetary provisions and the consideration of legislative bills. While Dhami has defended the government’s development priorities and called for constructive engagement, the opposition is demanding more time for debate and concrete action on unresolved public concerns.
The proceedings in Gairsain are expected to remain politically significant as both sides defend their positions on the state’s development priorities, public spending and the functioning of the legislature.
