Diljit Dosanjh Honors Punjab’s Heritage with Maharaja Bhupinder Singh-Inspired Met Gala Look
Diljit Dosanjh turned heads at the 2025 Met Gala with a look that paid tribute to the opulence and heritage of Punjab, but the story behind his outfit goes far beyond fashion. The Punjabi singer and actor chose a regal white traditional ensemble, complete with a turban, kurta, tehmat, and jewellery, all inspired by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala.

Who Was Maharaja Bhupinder Singh?
Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, born in 1891, was a ruler of Patiala known for his lavish lifestyle and immense wealth. He became the Maharaja of Patiala at just nine years old and went on to own 44 Rolls-Royce cars, the world’s largest collection of medals, and a legendary Cartier necklace weighing 1,000 carats. He was also a pioneer in Indian cricket, leading the country’s first-ever cricket team to England in 1911.
Maharaja Bhupinder Singh’s cricketing legacy isn’t just about his leadership on the field. His role as the captain of India’s first cricket team to tour England in 1911 partially inspired the plot of Ashutosh Gowariker’s Oscar-nominated film, Lagaan. The character Kachra, played by Aditya Lakhia, is based on Palwankar Baloo, a Dalit cricketer whom Bhupinder Singh captained. Bhupinder Singh was also instrumental in the formation of the BCCI and named the Ranji Trophy in honor of Maharaja Ranjitsinhji.
A Royal Style Statement: Diljit Dosanjh’s Tribute to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh
Diljit Dosanjh’s team wanted to pay an authentic tribute to the Maharaja by using his actual jewellery, including the iconic Cartier necklace now worth $2.5 billion. However, due to museum restrictions, they couldn’t access the original pieces. Instead, Indian jeweller Golecha was commissioned to create jewellery inspired by the Maharaja’s collection, including a striking turban brooch.
