French luxury fashion house Dior is under scrutiny after failing to credit Indian artisans whose exquisite handiwork featured prominently on a high-value coat showcased at Paris Fashion Week.

The coat, part of Dior Homme’s Menswear Ready-to-Wear Spring-Summer 2026 collection, was unveiled on June 27, 2025, during the prestigious event in Paris. Valued at an eye-watering ₹1.73 crore (approximately $200,000), the garment prominently displayed Lucknowi mukaish embroidery — a traditional Indian craft known for its intricate metallic threadwork.
Radhika Gupta, Chief of Edelweiss and a vocal advocate for Indian artisans, called out Dior for neglecting to acknowledge the craftsmen behind the masterpiece. This comes on the heels of a similar controversy where Italian luxury brand Prada faced criticism for lifting India’s Kolhapuri sandals without giving due credit.
Mukaish embroidery is a painstaking process that involves embedding delicate gold or silver metallic threads into silk fabric, creating a shimmering effect often seen in traditional Indian attire. The craft requires days of meticulous handiwork, representing the dedication and skill of generations of Indian artisans.
