Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav announced here on Saturday that Amritsar Rural Police, working closely with Central Agencies, has busted a drug and organized crime network supported by US-based smuggler Sarwan Singh, also known as Bhola Havelian. This comes amid the ongoing effort to make Punjab a safe and secure state in accordance with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s directives. Three of the group’s operatives were arrested from Ajnala.
The people who were taken into custody are Sukhdeep Singh, a resident of Raja Sansi in Amritsar, Akash Seth, also known as Raghu, and Karanjit Singh of Khalra in Tarn Taran. Six handguns, including five.30 bore Star handguns and one 9mm Glock, six live rounds, ten magazines, 200 grams of heroin, and an electronic scale have also been retrieved by police teams.
Notably, Bhola Havelian, who has a reward of Rs 2 lakh for his capture, is the brother of notorious drug dealer Ranjeet, also known as Cheeta, who was apprehended in May 2020 for a 532-kg heroin haul. The NIA is looking into the 532 heroin packets that were smuggled, and Ranjit Cheeta was the mastermind behind them. The packets were discovered in July 2019 at ICP Attari by the Customs department.
DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that police teams from the CIA Staff conducted a special police checking in the jurisdiction of Ajnala in response to intelligence reports that associates of Sarwan Singh had retrieved the weapon consignment and were planning to deliver it to someone. They arrested three accused individuals and found six pistols and ten magazines in their possession.
He continued, saying that 200 grams of heroin, six live cartridges, and an electronic weighing machine had been found at the site he had indicated to police teams following their revelation of Akash, also going by the name Raghu.
According to DGP’s preliminary investigations, the accused was directly delivering heroin and guns to smuggler Sarwan Singh, who is stationed in the United States. He continued, “More research is being done to determine backward and forward links in this instance.”
Further information was provided by the SSP Amritsar Rural Satinder Singh investigation, which further showed that Bhola Havelian was introduced to Akash alias Raghu by his cousin Sanjam alias Mathi of Ajnala, who is currently being held in Amritsar Jail. He said, “We’re going to bring Sanjam on a production warrant for more revelations.”
He stated that more arrests are anticipated in this case and that police teams are following the accused individuals’ cash trails to piece together the complete picture.
A case file number 122, dated June 22, 2024, has been filed at Police Station Ajnala under section 25 of the Arms Act, with additional sections 21 and 29 appended.
