“When we were ministers in the central government, we saw the work of self-help groups in many places outside, but there was nothing like this in Bihar at that time. When I got a chance to work in Bihar, we took a loan from the World Bank in 2006 and formed a self-help group and named it ‘Jeevika’. We gave the name ‘Jeevika Didi’ to the women who joined it. The central government of the time appreciated its work and ran it all over the country under the name of Aajeevika. There has been a lot of confidence in Jeevika didis and there has been a lot of change in their speech, lifestyle and way of life. The number of Jeevika Self Help Groups in Bihar has now gone up to 10.61 lakh, with which 1 crore 31 lakh Jeevika Didis have been connected.
