Punjab expands distance education under Education Revolution, setting up Learner Support Centres in colleges to make higher education more accessible.
The Punjab government, led by the Bhagwant Mann, has taken another significant step in the state’s ongoing “Education Revolution” by expanding access to higher education through distance learning facilities across colleges.
The decision aims to support working professionals, homemakers, and other aspiring learners who are unable to attend regular classes due to personal or professional commitments. Under this new initiative, distance education opportunities will now be made available to every eligible student across Punjab.
Learner Support Centres to Be Set Up in All Colleges
As part of the reform, all government, aided, and private colleges have been directed to establish Learner Support Centres under the framework of Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Punjab State Open University. These centres will act as academic facilitation hubs for students enrolled in distance education programs.
Through these support centres, students will be able to access study materials, academic guidance, examination assistance, and administrative services without needing to travel long distances to university campuses.

Focus on Accessibility and Inclusive Education
The Mann government has emphasized that the core objective of this initiative is to make higher education more inclusive and accessible. By integrating distance learning facilities within nearby colleges, the state aims to eliminate geographical and logistical barriers that often prevent students from continuing their education.
Officials stated that this approach will particularly benefit individuals in rural areas, women managing households, and working professionals seeking skill enhancement or academic qualifications.
Strengthening Punjab’s Education Ecosystem
Education authorities believe that the establishment of Learner Support Centres will significantly strengthen Punjab’s higher education ecosystem. It will also improve enrollment in distance learning programs and encourage lifelong learning among citizens.
The initiative aligns with the broader vision of transforming Punjab into a knowledge-driven state by improving access, quality, and flexibility in education delivery.
Government’s Vision for Skill Development
The Punjab government continues to focus on skill development and educational reforms under its “Education Revolution” agenda. By expanding distance education infrastructure, the state aims to bridge the gap between traditional education systems and modern learning needs.
Officials have confirmed that implementation guidelines have been issued to ensure smooth execution of the program across all districts.
