The process of layoffs began in 2022 when Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, announced a strategy aimed at increasing the company’s efficiency by 20%
In a move to enhance efficiency, Google has recently announced a 10% reduction in its managerial positions, including directors and VPs. This decision, communicated by CEO Sundar Pichai during an all-hands meeting, reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations amidst increasing competition in the AI space from firms like OpenAI.
The tech giant has been on a path of restructuring since 2022. This year’s cuts specifically targeted three levels of management—managers, directors, and vice presidents. Reports indicate that some roles have transitioned to non-managerial positions, while others have been completely eliminated, as stated by a Google spokesperson.
This recent round of layoffs follows last year’s significant restructuring, which laid off over 12,000 employees as part of a broader strategy to achieve a 20% boost in operational efficiency, originally outlined by CEO Pichai.
During the meeting, Pichai also shed light on the concept of “Googleyness,” urging employees to realign their understanding of what it means to be a part of the company. He recognized that the term had become overly vague and simplified it to emphasize essential principles such as mission-driven work, innovation, teamwork, and a collaborative environment. Pichai stressed the importance of focusing on the company’s mission, developing useful products, taking bold risks, and maintaining a resourceful attitude.
Google’s recent management restructuring is aligned with a wider trend in the tech industry as companies adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape driven by artificial intelligence.
