Back to Gotham | Robert Pattinson Hopes to Reprise Role in The Batman 2
May 14, 2025 – It’s been more than three years since The Batman captivated audiences with its gritty, noir-inspired take on Gotham City. Directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as the brooding vigilante, the film became a fresh and gritty take on the mythos of Gotham’s most iconic hero. But with little information on the long-awaited sequel, fans have been left wondering: what’s next for Gotham—and for Batman?
Robert Pattinson on The Batman 2: “I’ll Be Old Batman by Then” — Gotham’s Dark Knight Speaks Out
In a new interview with Naomi Ackie for Hero Magazine, Pattinson finally addressed the delay and gave fans a rare update, albeit in his signature sardonic style.
“I fing hope so,” Pattinson said, laughing, when asked if he’ll return as Batman. “I started out as young Batman and I’m going to be fing old Batman by the sequel.”
Pattinson’s portrayal of a younger, less refined Bruce Wayne navigating the corrupt underbelly of Gotham was widely praised. His gritty performance helped establish The Batman (2022) as a standout reboot, earning 85% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 87% from audiences. With its atmospheric tone and detective noir influence, the film gave a haunting and realistic portrayal of Gotham that fans hadn’t seen before.
The supporting cast was equally compelling: Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle brought emotional depth and moral ambiguity to her version of Catwoman, while Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, and Paul Dano rounded out a cast that truly brought Gotham’s chaotic ecosystem of power, fear, and crime to life.
Despite the film’s success, The Batman 2 has seen repeated delays, fueling speculation about its future. Rumors swirled that Matt Reeves might not return as director, but DC Studios co-head James Gunn quickly shut down the chatter. Responding to a fan on X (formerly Twitter), Gunn confirmed, “Yes. Huh?” when asked if Reeves was still attached to the project. He also debunked earlier claims that the sequel had been canceled altogether.
While concrete updates remain sparse, Pattinson had previously told Variety that filming is likely to begin before the end of 2025, with a tentative release set for 2027. That would mean nearly five years between installments—enough time, as Pattinson joked, to age out of “young Batman” territory.
The delay hasn’t dampened interest in returning to Gotham. In fact, the city itself remains a focal point of audience fascination. With other DC projects moving in new directions, The Batman universe has been categorized under DC’s “Elseworlds” label, allowing it to remain independent and maintain its unique vision of Gotham’s urban decay, crime, and shadows.
In the meantime, Pattinson fans—and Gotham loyalists—will have to wait a bit longer. But with Reeves still on board and Pattinson eager to return, The Batman 2 promises another gripping dive into Gotham’s twisted soul.
