Government to hold high-level talks with Meta after PM Narendra Modi’s Facebook post was briefly restricted, seeking answers on policy and technical issues.
The Government of India will hold high-level discussions with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, following the temporary restriction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook post. The meeting is expected to take place within the next week and will focus on both policy and technical aspects of the incident.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has asked Meta’s senior leadership to explain how the post was restricted and what measures have been introduced to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Government Seeks Detailed Explanation
Speaking on the sidelines of the CII Semiconductor Conference, Electronics and IT Secretary S. Krishnan said the government wants a comprehensive explanation from Meta regarding the issue.
According to Krishnan, the discussions will cover not only the technical reasons behind the incident but also broader policy concerns related to content moderation and platform accountability in India.
He added that the government expects Meta to provide clarity on the safeguards introduced after the incident.
Meta Introduces Additional Safeguards
According to officials, Meta has informed the government that it has strengthened its review process for content posted by the Prime Minister and other prominent public figures.
The company has reportedly introduced multiple layers of internal review, requiring decisions involving high-profile accounts to undergo additional scrutiny by senior officials before any moderation action is taken.
Meta has also conveyed that these enhanced protocols became operational on July 28.

Government Finds Earlier Explanation Insufficient
Although Meta earlier attributed the restriction of the PM Modi’s Facebook post to a technical error and issued an apology, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology reportedly considered the initial explanation inadequate.
As a result, the ministry summoned Meta’s public policy leadership and requested a more detailed briefing on the circumstances surrounding the incident and the company’s corrective measures.

The issue arose after shared a Modi’s Facebook post on July 23 addressing India’s youth and highlighting the government’s commitment to taking strict action against examination paper leaks.
The PM Modi’s Facebook post , which first appeared on Instagram and was later shared on Facebook, was briefly restricted before being restored by the platform.
Following the incident, the government initiated communication with Meta to seek accountability and ensure that similar occurrences are avoided in the future.
