Gurugram elevated road gets GMDA approval to ease congestion between Sirhaul Border and Cyber City, offering relief to daily commuters and businesses.
Commuters travelling between Delhi and Gurugram could soon get relief from one of the busiest traffic bottlenecks near the Sirhaul Border and Cyber City. The proposed Gurugram elevated road project has received approval from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), paving the way for further work on the plan.
The proposal was initially put forward by real estate major DLF and has been discussed with both GMDA and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The planned infrastructure is aimed at improving traffic movement around the Sirhaul Border-Shankar Chowk stretch, where congestion frequently builds up during peak hours.
Gurugram Elevated Road to Target Major Traffic Bottleneck
The stretch between the Sirhaul Border and the area around Shankar Chowk is only about 700 metres long, but it has emerged as a major congestion point for vehicles entering Gurugram from Delhi.
During morning and evening peak hours, traffic can slow considerably, with commuters sometimes taking more than 30 minutes to cover the short distance. The congestion can also spill over towards the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and adjoining roads.
The Gurugram elevated road is intended to provide an additional traffic level so that a significant portion of vehicles can bypass the existing bottleneck.
Traffic Pressure Around Cyber City
The Sirhaul Border-Shankar Chowk corridor is particularly important because of the large number of offices and commercial establishments located in Cyber City and nearby Udyog Vihar.
Thousands of employees travel to these business districts every day from Delhi and other parts of the National Capital Region, including Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.
Traffic volumes increase sharply during office hours, while evening congestion returns when employees leave workplaces at roughly the same time. The presence of major commercial destinations around the corridor keeps vehicle movement high throughout the day.

Project Expected to Improve Connectivity
The proposed Gurugram elevated road could reduce pressure on the existing carriageway by separating a portion of through traffic from vehicles using the ground-level road.
The project is expected to improve traffic flow towards Cyber City and surrounding commercial areas while reducing the possibility of queues extending back onto the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway.
Gurugram has been undertaking several road infrastructure initiatives to address congestion across the city. The authority has also identified the Rajeev Chowk-to-Sirhaul Border/Shankar Chowk stretch towards Delhi among the congestion points requiring intervention in its broader decongestion planning.
DLF Presented the Proposal
The elevated road proposal was presented by DLF before officials of GMDA and NHAI. With GMDA now giving its consent, the project can move towards the next stages of technical and implementation planning.
GMDA Chief Engineer (Roads) Praveen Chaudhary said the authority had agreed to the proposal submitted by DLF. He said traffic pressure between Sirhaul Border and Cyber City is substantial and expressed the expectation that the elevated road would improve vehicle movement and provide relief to commuters.
Construction Planning Still Remains
Approval of the proposal does not mean construction will begin immediately. Several aspects, including technical feasibility, financial arrangements and construction timelines, will need to be worked out before the project enters the execution stage.
Traffic management during construction will also be a crucial issue. Authorities will need to prepare suitable diversions and alternative routes so that ongoing traffic on the busy corridor is disrupted as little as possible.
The development comes amid a broader push to strengthen Gurugram’s road infrastructure. GMDA has been pursuing multiple elevated corridors and road improvement projects aimed at increasing capacity and reducing congestion across key routes. For instance, the authority has floated a ₹755-crore tender for a 4.2-km elevated corridor between Vatika Chowk and NH-48 on the Southern Peripheral Road.
Relief for Daily Commuters and Businesses
The Gurugram elevated road could have benefits beyond reducing travel time. Better connectivity to Cyber City and Udyog Vihar may make daily commuting easier for thousands of employees and improve access to major commercial hubs.
Business activity could also benefit if traffic movement becomes more predictable. For commuters travelling between Delhi and Gurugram every day, the project is expected to be particularly significant if it succeeds in easing the bottleneck around Sirhaul Border and Shankar Chowk.
The proposal is therefore being viewed as another step towards addressing Gurugram’s growing traffic challenge, although the actual impact will depend on timely execution and effective traffic management during and after construction.
