Hardip Singh Mundian inaugurates a ₹266.95-crore canal water scheme to provide treated drinking water to 167 Amritsar villages and 45,343 households.
Punjab has taken another major step towards strengthening rural drinking water infrastructure, with Cabinet Minister Hardip Singh Mundian inaugurating the ₹266.95-crore Canal Water-Based Multi-Village Water Supply Scheme at Kandowali and Majupura in Amritsar.
The Hardip Singh Mundian canal water scheme is designed to provide treated and safe drinking water to 167 villages across the district. The project is expected to benefit 45,343 households, reaching nearly 2.66 lakh people living in rural areas.
167 Villages to Get Treated Drinking Water
The newly inaugurated project aims to ensure a reliable supply of potable water for thousands of rural families. Under the Hardip Singh Mundian canal water scheme, treated water will be distributed to villages through an extensive pipeline network, helping improve access to clean drinking water.
The initiative is particularly significant for areas that have traditionally depended heavily on groundwater to meet their daily water requirements.

39 MLD Water Treatment Plant
A key component of the project is a 39 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant. The facility will treat canal water before it is supplied to households across the covered villages.
According to the project details, the Hardip Singh Mundian canal water scheme includes a 285.97-kilometre-long pipeline network. This infrastructure will help create a structured system for transporting treated water from the plant to the beneficiary villages.
20 Water Storage Tanks Strengthen Supply Network
The project also includes 20 water storage tanks to support the distribution system and maintain a more consistent supply. The combination of the treatment plant, storage facilities and extensive pipeline network is expected to strengthen the rural water supply infrastructure.
The Hardip Singh Mundian canal water scheme will also help reduce dependence on groundwater by shifting a significant portion of drinking water requirements towards treated canal water.
Nearly 2.66 Lakh Rural Residents to Benefit
With 45,343 households covered, the project will directly benefit nearly 2.66 lakh rural residents across 167 villages. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that people have access to treated drinking water closer to their homes and that rural communities receive a more dependable supply.
The Hardip Singh Mundian canal water scheme represents a significant investment in Amritsar’s rural water infrastructure, with the ₹266.95-crore project combining water treatment, storage and distribution facilities under one network.
Focus on Sustainable Water Management
By promoting the use of treated canal water, the project is also expected to contribute towards more sustainable management of groundwater resources. Regular potable water availability can help rural communities reduce their reliance on groundwater for household consumption.
The Hardip Singh Mundian canal water scheme, covering 167 villages with modern treatment and distribution infrastructure, is therefore positioned as an important step towards improving drinking water access and strengthening long-term water security in rural Amritsar.
