Haryana and Rajasthan agree on water sharing, dam projects and wastewater treatment in key meeting chaired by C.R. Patil.

A significant meeting on water resources, irrigation, and drinking water management was held under the chairmanship of Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil. The meeting brought together the Chief Ministers of Haryana and Rajasthan to discuss long-pending issues related to water distribution and infrastructure development.

The discussions focused on strengthening inter-state coordination to ensure efficient use of water resources and sustainable management of rivers and canals.

Rajasthan to Receive Its Share of Yamuna Water

During the meeting, it was agreed that Rajasthan will receive its due share of water as per the 1994 Upper Yamuna River Board agreement. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini confirmed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed on Monday to formalize this arrangement.

This decision is expected to improve water distribution clarity and reduce long-standing inter-state concerns over water allocation.

Push for Key Dam Projects

The meeting also reviewed the progress of major dam projects, including Renuka, Kishau, and Lakhwar. These projects were identified as critical for improving water storage capacity and ensuring long-term drinking water and irrigation supply across northern states.

Officials emphasized the need to accelerate construction timelines to address future water demand challenges.

Focus on Water Treatment and Environmental Protection

Another key outcome of the meeting was the decision to set up treatment plants for wastewater flowing into the Ghaggar canal. The participants also agreed on the importance of stopping untreated sewage from entering rivers to protect water quality and ecological balance.

The initiative aims to strengthen environmental protection while ensuring cleaner and safer water resources for communities.

Joint Commitment for Sustainable Water Management

The central and state governments reiterated their commitment to collaborative water management. Officials highlighted that coordinated efforts are essential to ensure equitable distribution, improved irrigation systems, and safe drinking water supply.

The meeting is being seen as an important step toward long-term water security and inter-state cooperation in northern India.
