HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ TV Series Begins Filming with Newly Cast Leads
HBO has officially cast the lead roles for its highly anticipated HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ TV series, revealing Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. This exciting casting announcement comes after an extensive search that attracted more than 30,000 actors who auditioned since HBO’s open casting call launched last fall. Filming for HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series is expected to begin this summer.

Creative Team and Production Details of HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’
Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer/director Mark Mylod expressed their enthusiasm about the new cast, stating, “After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”
This new series marks a fresh chapter for the beloved franchise. McLaughlin, Stanton, and Stout step into roles famously brought to life by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in the early 2000s. While largely newcomers, each brings notable experience to the project: McLaughlin appeared in the upcoming comedy “Grow” on Sky, Stanton starred as Matilda in the West End production of “Matilda: The Musical” from 2023-2024, and HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ will be Stout’s first major acting role.
Joining the trio are esteemed actors John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, who also serves as showrunner. Mark Mylod will direct multiple episodes and executive produce alongside Gardiner. Production is a collaboration between HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers also include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.
The involvement of J.K. Rowling, author of the original “Harry Potter” books, has sparked controversy in recent years due to her outspoken views on the transgender community. Addressing concerns about Rowling’s influence on the series, HBO’s chief content officer Casey Bloys recently said on “The Town” podcast, “We already have a show on HBO from her called ‘C.B. Strike’ that we do with the BBC. It’s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She’s entitled to them. HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.”
