Mythological Stories Associated with Holi

Holi 2024: The Puranas offer several mythical tales pertaining to Holi. Holika Dahan is observed as a celebration of good triumphing over evil. In one version, Prahlad, the son of Hiranyakashipu, the demon king, was upset with his father because he was a devout disciple of Lord Vishnu.

Hiranyakashipu turned to his sister Holika for assistance because she was protected from fire by a blessing. Holika picked Prahlad up and put him in her lap before going into the flames to kill him. But Holika was destroyed by the flames and Prahlad was spared because of Prahlad’s devotion. In remembrance of Radha and Krishna’s heavenly love, Holi is also observed.
