The ICC World Cup Format Changes have brought a major transformation to international cricket as the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved new structures for the men’s ODI World Cup and T20 World Cup during its Annual Conference in Edinburgh.
The revised formats are designed to increase competition, reduce low-stakes matches, and ensure that every game carries greater importance throughout the tournaments. The changes were approved following recommendations from the ICC Chief Executives’ Committee and will be introduced from the next tournament cycle.
ICC World Cup Format Changes: ODI World Cup Introduces New Super 7 Stage
Under the latest ICC World Cup Format Changes, the 14-team ODI World Cup will now follow a three-stage competition model.
In the opening phase, the bottom three qualified teams will compete in a preliminary Super Series. The winner of this round will move into the main tournament stage.
The remaining 13 teams will then be divided into two groups of six, with the Super Series winner joining one of the groups. The top three teams from each group, along with the next best-performing team overall, will qualify for the newly introduced Super 7 stage.
In this phase, all seven teams will compete in a round-robin format, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals.
According to ICC, the new structure will make matches in the early stages more significant and create a stronger competitive storyline throughout the tournament.
T20 World Cup Gets Expanded Super 10 Round
The ICC World Cup Format Changes also include a major update to the men’s T20 World Cup structure, which currently features 20 teams.
The tournament will begin with five groups of four teams each. The top two teams from every group will advance to the next round.

The second stage will feature a Super 10 format, where teams will be divided into two groups of five. The group winners will directly qualify for the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the second and third-placed teams from both groups will compete in crossover eliminator matches to decide the remaining two semi-finalists.
The ICC said the updated T20 format will provide emerging cricket nations with greater opportunities while making the knockout race more intense.
New Qualification Pathway Announced for 2028 T20 World Cup
Along with the ICC World Cup Format Changes, the ICC also confirmed the qualification process for the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Scotland has been granted direct entry into the Europe Regional Final due to exceptional circumstances, while other teams will compete through regional qualifiers and the Global Qualifier route.
The move aims to maintain a balance between expanding participation and ensuring competitive quality at the global level.
ICC to Review Commercial Implementation
The ICC Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee will review the approved competition structures in November before finalising their commercial implementation.
With these ICC World Cup Format Changes, cricket’s global governing body aims to create more meaningful matches, strengthen competition, and provide a better platform for both established teams and emerging cricket nations.
