Actor Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, has reportedly been directed to leave India by October 28 following his participation in a protest organised by the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in Mumbai. The development has drawn attention because the actor is believed to hold US citizenship and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card rather than full Indian citizenship.
According to reports, the Mumbai Police issued a notice to the actor days after he joined the demonstration at August Kranti Maidan on October 10. The protest was held to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The reported action has brought the actor’s immigration status and participation in the demonstration into focus.
Why Was Imran Khan Asked to Leave India?
According to the police, action was taken against Imran Khan under the relevant provisions of immigration law because he participated in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen. The notice reportedly gives him until October 28 to leave the country.
The action has been linked to the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. Section 7 of the legislation empowers the Central Government to issue directions concerning the entry, departure, presence and movement of foreign nationals in India.
The exact scope of the notice and the legal grounds applicable to the actor would need to be assessed from the official document. The reported development does not, by itself, establish that a court has found him guilty of any offence.
BJP Leader Kirit Somaiya Had Sought Action
The matter had earlier been raised by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who approached the Mumbai Police seeking action against the actor over his participation in the demonstration.
Somaiya alleged that Imran Khan had taken part in an unauthorised political agitation and questioned whether his participation was consistent with the conditions applicable to OCI cardholders and visa regulations.
The BJP leader reportedly asked the police to investigate the matter and determine whether the actor had the necessary legal permission to participate in the protest.
Following these developments, the report that Imran Khan was asked to leave India by October 28 brought renewed attention to the case. However, the allegations raised by a political leader should be distinguished from the grounds formally cited by the authorities.
Imran Khan Was Detained During the CJP Protest
Imran Khan attended the demonstration at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10. His partner, actor Lekha Washington, and his cousin Zayne Marie Khan were also present at the location.
Police detained the three during the protest and released them later. Reports stated that around 400 people were detained during the demonstration, including members of the organisation Hum Bharat Ke Log, led by Tushar Gandhi, and activists associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
The protest focused on demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Participants gathered to express their opposition and raise concerns about restrictions on public demonstrations and freedom of expression.

What Did Imran Khan Say Before His Detention?
Before being detained, the actor told the media that he had come to the protest as a resident of Mumbai and was not representing any political organisation.
He questioned why people’s movement was being restricted and why citizens’ voices were being suppressed. He also clarified that he was not there to put forward any specific demands on behalf of a group.
His remarks attracted attention because they presented his participation as an individual decision rather than an official representation of the CJP or another organisation.
Actor Shared a Selfie From the Police Van
After being detained, Imran Khan shared a photograph of himself inside a police van on social media. The actor captioned the picture, “Apparently I’m going for a drive”.
A video from the incident also circulated online in which he was heard saying “Jai Hind” to the police. In another clip, he said he did not know why he had been taken into custody and claimed that the detained individuals had been made to sit in police vans.
He further said that he and others had been driven around for approximately two hours before being released.
What Is the Significance of His OCI Status?
An Overseas Citizen of India card does not confer full Indian citizenship. OCI cardholders are foreign nationals who receive certain immigration and residency-related privileges under Indian law, subject to applicable conditions and restrictions.
The distinction between Indian citizenship and OCI status is relevant to the reported police action against Imran Khan. However, determining whether a particular protest violates any applicable condition depends on the precise legal provisions, the circumstances and the official notice.
For now, Imran Khan has reportedly been asked to leave India by October 28, following his participation in the CJP protest. Further clarity on the matter will depend on the official documents and any subsequent response from the actor or the authorities.
