India Rejects Trump’s ‘Dead Economy’ Jab, Hits Back at U.S. Tariffs
India has issued a strong and composed response to the United States following the recent imposition of 25% tariffs on Indian goods by the Biden administration, continuing trade policies first introduced by former President Donald Trump. U.S. officials have cited economic protectionism and an alleged imbalance in trade as the rationale, with Trump—currently in the spotlight for his political return—calling India a “dead economy” during a public statement.

However, India has made it clear it won’t be coerced into what it sees as an unfavorable trade deal.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal responded firmly during a press briefing, rejecting both the tariffs and Trump’s disparaging remark. “India is not a dead economy. We are one of the world’s fastest-growing and most resilient markets,” he stated. Goyal emphasized that India values fair trade but will not compromise its economic sovereignty for the sake of external pressure.
India Draws a Red Line
The minister’s remarks reflect a broader shift in India’s international economic posture. No longer willing to be seen as a soft negotiator, India is positioning itself as a confident global player. Officials have reiterated that retaliatory measures are being considered and that India’s focus remains on strengthening domestic manufacturing, boosting exports through strategic partnerships, and maintaining a balanced trade ecosystem.
