IPL 2025 Helps JioHotstar Close In on Netflix—What’s Next for Streaming?
The 2025 edition of the IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League 2025) has propelled JioHotstar’s subscriber base to a staggering 280 million users this month, bringing it dangerously close to Netflix’s global milestone of 300 million subscribers. This rapid growth follows the recent merger of Disney+ Hotstar and Jio Cinema into the unified OTT platform JioHotstar, launched just three months ago.
JioHotstar’s Strategy to Close the Gap with Netflix
According to a report by the Financial Times, JioHotstar’s subscriptions surged from 200 million in April to 280 million in May, driven largely by the IPL 2025 season and an aggressive expansion strategy. Sanjog Gupta, Chief Executive for Sports at JioStar, described the IPL season as “the biggest season of IPL till now both in terms of viewership as well as monetisation.”
JioStar is targeting revenue of Rs 4,500 crore from the IPL 2025 event alone, underscoring the platform’s dominant position in India’s sports streaming market.
Launched on February 14, 2025, JioHotstar began with 50 million paid subscribers and has seen an explosive growth, adding 150 million subscribers over just two months. The initial surge was largely credited to the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, hosted by the Pakistan Cricket Board from February 19 to March 9, which featured 15 matches across Pakistan and the UAE.
With revenues of Rs 26,000 crore in FY24, JioStar ranks as India’s second-largest media company after Google. The company’s successful merger and strategic sports broadcasting rights have positioned it to challenge global streaming giants on their home turf.
As the IPL 2025 continues to attract millions of viewers, JioHotstar’s rise illustrates the growing power and potential of Indian OTT platforms in the global media landscape.
