Kamal Haasan in Thug Life –The Role No One Saw Coming!
Filmmaker Kamal Haasan is ready to make a return to the big screen with his new film Thug Life. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam, the movie not only marks a high-profile reunion but also showcases a bold new side of Kamal Haasan in Thug Life.
A Reunion 38 Years in the Making
The last time Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam collaborated was in the legendary 1987 film Nayakan, still hailed as a landmark in Indian cinema. Now, nearly four decades later, Thug Life brings these two creative giants back together — and audiences are eager to see what unfolds.
Kamal Haasan on Creativity, Direction, and Trust
In a candid conversation with IANS ahead of the film’s June 5 release, Kamal Haasan opened up about what it means to work under another director, especially one as respected as Ratnam. When asked whether he ever switches off his “inner filmmaker” while acting, his reply was honest and insightful:
“Every faculty should be on. He (Mani Ratnam) should not switch off the actor in him either. Because he sometimes tells me to tuck my stomach in. I had put on weight at that time. I don’t carry that weight at all now,” Haasan said with a laugh.
The comment underscores the deep creative trust and shared commitment to excellence between the actor and director.
Evolving With Cinema: Kamal Haasan in Thug Life
Reflecting on how Indian cinema has evolved since Nayakan, Kamal offered a thoughtful take on his creative journey:
“Cinema has become a language. We don’t know how fluent we are in it, but we speak it. We’re improving. We’ve lost the baby talk, the slur—we’re still a work in progress.”
He went on to say:
“The carpenter in the time of Jesus and the carpenter of today are two different species. That’s how we and our art evolve.”
It’s clear that Kamal Haasan in Thug Life isn’t just about performance — it’s about transformation and legacy. The role seems to challenge him as an actor and reflect his growth as a storyteller.
