Jackie Chan Training – Jackie Chan’s Decades of Training Keep Him Ready for Action
Director Jonathan Entwistle highlighted a fundamental contrast between martial arts styles in the film: “Hong Kong martial arts is all about choreography and the moves, whereas American martial arts focuses more on punching.” This blend is showcased throughout Karate Kid: Legends.
Jackie Chan, who first appeared in the franchise’s 2010 reboot alongside Jaden Smith, revealed that he didn’t need any new training for this role. “I don’t need to anymore. I’ve been training every day for 64 years. I’ve been fighting, fighting, fighting,” said the 71-year-old star, who is renowned for performing his own stunts and fight choreography.
Though Chan admits that age has slowed him down—“I’m not like I used to be when I was 20, and could do a triple kick in the sky. Now, I do one kick”—his dedication to authentic action remains unchanged.
Chan also shared valuable advice for his co-star Wang, encouraging him to do his own stunts whenever possible. “I said, ‘Ben, we do have a double for you, but you should do your own thing. The audience respects you more. When you use a double, you become lazy.’”
In contrast, Wang underwent a rigorous training schedule, spending five intense days a week for a month and a half working with stunt coordinators before filming began. “I got a systematic ass-kicking,” he admitted. The team had 90 days to prepare him to perform fight scenes alongside Jackie Chan convincingly.
Wang praised Chan’s support, saying, “When Jackie showed up, he was nothing but helpful.” In turn, Chan complimented the young actor, calling him “like my young Jackie Chan.”
Karate Kid: Legends offers fans a fresh yet nostalgic take on martial arts storytelling, blending the artistry of Hong Kong-style kung fu with American karate traditions—brought to life by two generations of martial arts talent.
