Madras High Court quashes order for Jana Nayagan censor certificate. Thalapathy Vijay fans wait as Tamil film release faces uncertainty.
Actor Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated Tamil film Jana Nayagan has hit another legal roadblock, keeping fans and industry insiders on edge. The Madras High Court delivered its verdict today, quashing the single-judge order that had directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a censor certificate. As a result, the film’s release date remains uncertain.
The dispute arose after KVN Productions, the film’s producers, claimed that the CBFC delayed issuing the final censor certificate despite complying with suggested edits from the examining committee. The controversy reportedly started when the film was sent to a reviewing committee following complaints about misrepresentation of armed forces and allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Later, it emerged that the complaint came from a member of the examining committee itself.

Initially, a single-judge in the Madras High Court had ruled in favor of the producers, directing the CBFC to grant immediate clearance. However, the division bench, comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Srivastava and Justice Arul Murugan, overturned this order. The bench observed that the single-judge erred by evaluating the merits of the content-related complaint. The case has been remanded back to the single-judge for reconsideration, giving the petitioners an opportunity to amend their plea.
With this development, the film’s release, initially scheduled for January 9, 2026, is now further delayed. Fans of Thalapathy Vijay have expressed disappointment on social media platforms, including X, but continue to support the actor and his final film before fully entering politics.
Jana Nayagan features Vijay in what is being described as his last cinematic role before his political journey intensifies. The film has been one of the most awaited releases in Tamil cinema, with expectations high due to the star power of Vijay and the sensitive topics the story touches upon.
As of now, the film’s release date remains unresolved, and industry watchers are closely monitoring the court proceedings. The High Court’s latest order highlights the delicate balance between cinematic expression and regulatory compliance, making this one of the most talked-about censor controversies in recent times.
