Karan Johar clarifies there are no plans for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2, preserving its nostalgia while keeping Takht as a future project.
Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar has finally addressed the ongoing speculation about a sequel to his 2001 blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G), clarifying that there are no current plans for K3G 2 or a revival of his ambitious period drama Takht. Speaking to Sonal Kalra on The Right Angle, Johar emphasized that while every film has its imperfections, the emotional legacy of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is something he would never compromise.
Released in 2001, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic family dramas, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amitabh Bachchan, and Hrithik Roshan. Its enduring charm lies in the nostalgia it evokes across generations. Karan Johar explained, “I would never make K3G 2—not because Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was perfect, but because it holds immense nostalgia. Generations have grown up with the film, and tampering with that legacy would be a mistake.”

He also dismissed rumours about reviving Takht, the period drama announced in 2021 featuring a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Anil Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor, and Bhumi Pednekar. While acknowledging that the film remains unreleased due to COVID-19 delays, Johar stated, “Takht is one of the strongest screenplays I’ve worked on, written brilliantly by Sumit Roy. I hope to bring it to life in the future, but not at the expense of existing nostalgic classics like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.”
The filmmaker emphasized that he is grateful for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’s continued love and recognition. He said, “Every film has flaws, but K3G has an emotional depth that generations cherish. It continues to live on, and I am proud of it. The thought of a sequel would only risk disturbing what people have loved for decades.”
Johar’s statement ends months of speculation around Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2, making it clear that fans can continue to enjoy the original film without worrying about a reboot. While Takht remains in Karan Johar’s future plans, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham 2 is officially off the table, preserving its legacy as one of Bollywood’s most beloved family dramas.
