Is Your Grocery App Safe? KiranaPro Hack Puts Millions’ Data in Danger
In a shocking cyberattack, Indian grocery app KiranaPro has been severely compromised, leaving the app unusable and exposing sensitive user data, including bank details. The grocery app, which had quickly risen in popularity since its launch in December 2024, now faces a major setback after hackers gained access to critical systems and wiped the company’s servers clean.

How KiranaPro Lost It All Overnight?
KiranaPro’s founder, Deepak Ravindran, confirmed the breach to TechCrunch, revealing that hackers infiltrated their Amazon Web Services (AWS) and GitHub accounts—likely by exploiting credentials from a former employee. This allowed the attackers to delete everything from the app’s codebase to vital customer information such as names, addresses, and payment details.
The grocery app had distinguished itself by offering a voice-based ordering system in multiple regional languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, and English. It connected users to local kirana stores across 50 cities and was handling approximately 2,000 orders daily. The company had ambitious plans to expand its footprint within 100 days before the cyberattack brought operations to a grinding halt.
The breach was discovered on May 26 when KiranaPro’s team found themselves locked out of their AWS account. Despite having two-factor authentication in place, hackers managed to bypass security measures, leading to the wiping of all virtual machines (EC2 instances) that powered the grocery app.
In response, KiranaPro is working with GitHub to trace the hackers and is preparing legal action against former employees who failed to surrender their login credentials. Backed by prominent investors such as Blume Ventures and Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, KiranaPro hopes to recover from this blow, though the road ahead looks challenging.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the increasing cyber risks facing emerging tech startups, especially in the booming grocery app space.
