From Local to Global: MP’s ODOP Products Gaining Worldwide Recognition
Madhya Pradesh is making significant strides in expanding its local products to global markets. A growing base of exporters is emerging at the grassroots level. Several ODOP products have received Geographical Indication (GI) tags, boosting their global demand. This has improved the livelihoods of artisans and producers, especially in the fields of handicrafts, agriculture, and food processing.
The ODOP scheme in Madhya Pradesh includes products selected for their geographical, biological, natural, or production-specific uniqueness. The scheme is being implemented across all districts, covering a wide range of products including green vegetables, millets, handicrafts, handlooms and local tools. Local artisans and products are receiving special encouragement and support.
So far, 19 products from various districts have received GI tags, including Chanderi Saree, Bagh Print, Nagpur Orange, Ratlami Sev, Kadaknath Chicken, Chinor Rice, Boutique Print, Stone Craft, Leather Toys, Bell Metal Ware, Maheshwari Saree, Mahoba Deshwari Paan, Morena Gajak, Sundarja Mango, Sharbati Wheat, Gond Painting, Wrought Iron Craft, Handmade Carpet and Varasivni Handloom Saree. Out of these, seven products are part of the ODOP scheme.
Madhya Pradesh has successfully showcased its products in major international markets. Products from various districts such as high-quality bananas from Burhanpur, aromatic basmati rice from Raisen and Chinor rice from Balaghat are now gaining national and international recognition. These products are not just enhancing the state’s identity but also contributing to economic growth, job creation, and export potential.
The ODOP initiative has now become a people-driven movement, with active involvement from artisans, women’s self-help groups, FPOs, startups and local entrepreneurs. The state government has taken multiple steps to elevate these products from local to global—including product-based training, branding, packaging improvements, digitization and logistical support for exports.
Madhya Pradesh is no longer just a land of culture and craftsmanship, but an emerging industrial and export powerhouse. This achievement reflects the state’s commitment to realising the vision of ‘Local Hands to Global Platforms’, aligning with the goals of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
With its diverse and distinctive products, Madhya Pradesh stands out. The ODOP scheme is a unique initiative not replicated in any other country, and each district reflects its distinct heritage. Work is ongoing to enhance branding, quality, and packaging, ensuring global recognition for these high-quality products. ODOP is also helping promote tourism through local specialties.
A compilation of the best practices has been prepared to guide the advancement of ODOP products. The central government has identified over 1,200 unique products across over 750 districts, spanning agriculture, food processing, handlooms, handicrafts and more. The goal is to add value, promote marketing and connect local products to global markets.
ODOP walls have been established in Singapore, New York, Vancouver, Milan, Kuwait, Bahrain and Japan. ODOP products are now available in retail outlets such as Mustafa Centre and Centerpoint Mall in Singapore.
Between April 1 and June 11, 2024, the National Awards Portal received 641 entries for the ODOP Awards, including 587 from districts, 31 from states/UTs and 23 from Indian missions abroad.
