Madras High Court directs CBFC to issue UA certificate for Vijay’s Jana Nayagan after modifications, ending the long certification drama.
Jana Nayagan: In a major development for Vijay fans, the Madras High Court has directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a UA certificate for his upcoming film Jana Nayagan, once the required modifications are completed. The court’s order comes after a prolonged tussle over the film’s certification, providing significant relief to both the makers and fans eagerly awaiting the release.
Certification Drama and Court Intervention
Jana Nayagan, touted as Vijay’s last cinematic outing before fully entering politics, was originally scheduled to release on January 9, 2026. However, the film faced delays after the CBFC raised objections despite the makers submitting the film over a month ago.
The Madras High Court criticized the CBFC for entertaining last-minute complaints, stating, “entertaining such complaints is a dangerous trend”, and noted that the complaint against the film appeared to be an “afterthought.” The court also confirmed that the film would not be sent back to the CBFC review panel, further expediting the certification process.

Release Postponed
Following the Wednesday hearing (January 7), the producers announced the postponement of the film’s release. KVN Productions shared a statement on X, explaining:
“It is with a heavy heart that we share this update with our valued stakeholders and audiences. The release of Jana Nayagan, eagerly awaited on January 9, has been postponed due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control.”
The production house added that the new release date will be announced soon and requested fans’ patience and continued support.
UK distributor Ahimsa Entertainment also confirmed the postponement. Following the announcement, refunds for tickets booked online and at counters have been initiated, with theatre owners ensuring smooth reimbursement for customers.
Why Certification Was Delayed
Court records revealed that the CBFC initially raised concerns over the film’s high levels of violence, which were deemed excessive for public viewing. While the producers complied with the suggested cuts, a board member raised additional objections at the last minute.
One key concern was the alleged use of a defence emblem in some scenes, which required clarification and official approval. Additional objections were raised regarding scenes with communal overtones, which needed modification to prevent misinterpretation. These last-minute issues caused the delay in certification.
According to the producers, after addressing the CBFC’s concerns related to violence, they were informed on December 22, 2025, that the film would be cleared for a U/A certificate.
Star-Studded Cast and Director
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay, alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain. The film has generated massive anticipation among fans, and the High Court’s decision is expected to ensure a smoother release once modifications are completed.
