A political dispute has intensified in Gujarat after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manoj Sorathiya raised questions over alleged illegal liquor sales, police action and accumulated hotfix waste in the Varachha Road area of Surat. Sorathiya accused the state government and police administration of failing to address issues raised by local residents and AAP workers.
According to Manoj Sorathiya, AAP workers had recently conducted an alleged raid at a suspected liquor-selling spot in Varachha and informed the police. He questioned why action had not been taken against the concerned police personnel despite the party’s allegations of illegal liquor activity in the area.
Sorathiya Questions Police Action
The AAP Gujarat organisation general secretary also criticised the detention and legal action allegedly taken against party workers. He claimed that AAP members had collected hotfix waste lying along Varachha Road and taken it to the mayor’s residence as a form of protest.
Manoj Sorathiya alleged that instead of resolving the waste-related issue, police detained some AAP workers and initiated legal proceedings against them. He described the action as an attempt to discourage people from raising civic issues.
He further questioned Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi over whether action would be taken against officials at the Varachha police station following the party’s allegations regarding the suspected liquor trade.
AAP Raises Concern Over Liquor Sales
The AAP leader also made strong allegations regarding the availability of liquor in the area. He claimed that illegal liquor sales were affecting residents and raised concerns about the safety of women and girls.

Sorathiya said the government should focus on alleged bootleggers and those involved in illegal liquor activities rather than taking action against people who raise public issues. Hotfix Waste Becomes Another Flashpoint
Apart from the liquor issue, the accumulation of hotfix waste on Varachha Road has emerged as another point of confrontation between AAP workers and the civic administration.
AAP workers reportedly used the waste as part of their protest to highlight what they described as a lack of civic action. Manoj Sorathiya said that residents should not have to resort to protests merely to get attention to basic public concerns such as waste management.
He alleged that the administration’s response to the protest reflected an unwillingness to listen to citizens. Sorathiya also criticised the government over what he described as a shrinking space for people to raise questions against those in power.

Taking a broader political swipe at the Gujarat government, Manoj Sorathiya said that people are observing how authorities respond to issues involving liquor, civic waste and police action.
He warned that continued public dissatisfaction could have political consequences for the ruling establishment. The AAP leader maintained that his party would continue to raise issues affecting residents and would not be deterred by police action or legal proceedings.
The controversy now centres on two key questions: whether the allegations concerning illegal liquor sales in Varachha will be investigated and whether the civic administration will take steps to address the hotfix waste issue.
