England’s pace bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out of the remainder of the Ashes series after a recurring knee injury, ending his brief return to international cricket. The 35-year-old played in the first Test in Perth following a lengthy injury layoff but was sidelined for the day-night match in Brisbane as a precaution.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Wood’s knee injury has flared up again, forcing him to return home for further rehabilitation. In his place, Surrey fast bowler Matthew Fisher has been called up to join the squad, having recently represented the England Lions in practice matches in Australia.

“Mark Wood will return home later this week to work closely with the ECB medical team on his rehabilitation and recovery,” the ECB said in an official statement. “Surrey seamer Matthew Fisher has been added to the senior squad and will link up with the group this week.”

Wood expressed his disappointment at being sidelined once more after months of intense rehab and surgery. Posting on Instagram, he shared his emotional reaction:

“This looks short… like my trip. Gutted to be out of the remainder of the Ashes. After extensive surgery and seven long months of work and rehab to get back into the Test arena, my knee just hasn’t held up. None of us expected this.”

He added that despite intensive medical treatment and injections, his knee injury proved worse than anticipated. Wood thanked fans, teammates, and the Barmy Army for their unwavering support and vowed to return to top-level cricket in the future.

“Whatever happens, I will continue to push the limits to get back again. It has been a tough road these past few months, but I remain determined to give it another proper go,” he wrote.

With Mark Wood ruled out, England are likely to bring in Josh Tongue for the upcoming Adelaide Test. The team will also reassess their batting lineup after heavy defeats in Perth and Brisbane, leaving them 0-2 down in the series. England now face an uphill battle if they hope to salvage a win in the remaining matches against Australia on home soil.
